General Conference meets every four years and is the official body for determining church law and doctrine. GC was originally delayed due to the covid-19 pandemic, but was subsequently postponed year after year even after the crisis subsided. However, in the interim (2020-2023), 7800+ local UMC congregations left the denomination. Most joined the traditional/conservative Global Methodist Church (formed as a result of a pre-2020 agreement by all parties to amicably split the church), but others simply became independent.
