Λέει το λεξικό: "Μέρισμα (Dividend) Μέρισμα είναι το μερίδιο ανά μετοχή των καθαρών κερδών μιας εταιρείας που διανέμεται στους μετόχους της. Τα μερίσματα συνήθως δίνονται σε μετρητά αλλά μπορούν να δοθούν και με την μορφή μετοχών ή άλλων περιουσιακών στοιχείων. Τα μερίσματα παρέχουν ένα κίνητρο στους επενδυτές να κατέχουν μετοχές από μεγάλες εταιρίες ακόμα και αν δεν αναμένεται μεγάλη ανάπτυξη από αυτές. Το μέρισμα συνήθως αναφέρεται με όρους χρηματικής αξίας, δηλαδή πόσα ευρώ θα αποδώσει κάθε μετοχή, αλλά μπορεί να αναφέρεται επίσης ως ποσοστό επί της αγοραίας αξίας της μετοχής, όρος γνωστός και ως μερισματική απόδοση.
