Esta antigua ciudad greco-romana debe su nombre a Afrodita, la diosa del amor, quien era adorada en un santuario importante dentro de la ciudad. Afrodisias fue habitada desde tiempos prehistóricos [1] pero alcanzó su mayor esplendor en la época helenística, alrededor del siglo III a.C. Fue fundada sobre un asentamiento más antiguo y creció rápidamente por la reputación creciente de la diosa Afrodita y por el impulso del general y político romano Julio César que rindió homenaje a la diosa (una estatua de Eros en oro de dedicada a Afrodita, por ejemplo) y sobre todo, la influencia de Octavio, la ciudad obtuvo unos privilegios, tales como la autonomía de la ciudad, su exención...
