Because we grow our own seedlings, right in the ground. (Many folks buy them from the local ag coop, and elsewhere, or grow them in greenhouses in trays, etc.) This involves a certain amount of planning and measuring. We decided the area of seedling beds we would need by comparing the area of the beds we planted last year and the amount of rice we harvested, and imagining how much we would like to harvest this year.
