Ésa fue la última vez que vi mi casa y mis pertenencias. Fue también la última vez que supe de mi madre. Tenía diez años cuando ocurrió. Mi padre y yo no nos volvimos a detener sino hasta horas más tarde en una gasolinera cercana a Cuatro Ciénegas. Me había quedado dormido. Aparcó la Cheyenne debajo de un toldo iluminado por neones. La quietud de aquel oasis artificial en medio del semidesierto, las luces fluorescentes, el olor enervante de la gasolina, me sacaron del sueño. Pero sólo para creer que entraba en otro.
