This also picks up on Aminah’s writing around class divisions and not looking back to pull others up. Everything that Fanon says about his experiences in France in the 1950s rings true for me today with our experiences in Florence, primarily in the way that Italians treat immigrants of color. The racism is palpable and visible – from the way the Senegalese vendors are looked through as if they weren’t there, the way the Roma (Gypsies) are cursed at in the street, or the way North Africans are referred to derisively in conversation.
