The history goes back to the times of the Romans. They were attracted to the lead ores found in the area. More recently high quality limestone was quarried in the area, though these quarries are now closed. The cottage is located on a hill on the Derby Road. The centre of town is 330 metres to the north along the Derby Road. A miner’s cottage The cottage was built in 1905 to house a quarry worker’s family. As part of a small terrace of brick built and tiled roof houses, it had two rooms downstairs and two rooms upstairs. The tin bath would have been used in the kitchen and stored in an outhouse when not in use. Over the years, the cottage has been modernised to give a lounge and kitchen downstairs.
