Often it felt like our whole day was spent negotiating such requests, from street kids to housekeepers to close friends. Something our country rep told us at the beginning was helpful – there is no shame in asking. In our culture, asking for money involves a certain loss of dignity, but in Congo we soon saw that people did not feel this way at all.
