The first part sketches out some of the trends in German Romanticism that have shaped the way I look at the 20th Century, and the way the 20th Century looked at itself. This includes Nietzsche, Marx and Freud, with Hegel as the most important ancestor (well, Nietzsche considered him beneath contempt, but that’s another story). The second part covers my dissertation project and can be roughly divided into two sections – cities and Bohemians. I’ll make a real effort at a discussion of ‘why this research?’ soon but I’m starting with a version of the question below.
