July 23, 2019 by Carrie King Sustained Investigation vs Concentration As of the fall of 2019, the Concentration section of the AP Studio Art portfolio is being replaced with the Sustained Investigation. Now, students will make 15 pieces investigating a question they write at the beginning of the year. Here’s a visual way to think about it, as described by my colleague, C. Zammett : A Concentration is like a wagon wheel. The topic is in the middle. 12 spokes poke out from it, the 12 artworks connected to the topic. Students make a piece and then return back to the topic to make the next one. They all match (visual coherence). A Sustained Investigation is like a tree branch.
