These approaches are not only useful in scientific studies, but are also applied extensively in the entertainment industry and interactive applications. The various applications of fluid visualization have different criteria that have to be met, resulting in a large number of techniques which are specialized to give solutions to particular aspects of the problem, each with with a variety of trade-offs. In computer graphics, the most common two techniques are grid based simulations, and particle based simulations.
