La persoanele mai în vârstă umflarea picioarelor este o suferință întâlnită destul de des, însă se poate întâmpla și persoanelor mai tinere. Ea poate produce discomfort, și suferință mai mică sau mai mare. Mersul pe jos devine o problemă mare, sau uneori imposibilă, ceea ce este foarte, foarte dificil. Picioarele se umflă mai mult în partea lor de jos, în general de la genunchi în jos, ajungând să arate în cele mai dificile cazuri – ca 2 buturugi.
