Selayang Pandang Kesultanan Ternate memiliki peran penting di kawasan timur nusantara sejak abad XIII hingga abad XVII. Di masa keemasannya, yakni pada abad XVI, kekuasaan kesultanan membentang mulai dari seluruh wilayah di Maluku, Sulawesi Utara, kepulauan-kepulauan di Filipina selatan, hingga kepulauan Marshall di pasifik. Pada tanggal 7 Desember 1976, Istana Kesultanan Ternate dimasukkan sebagai benda cagar budaya. Para ahli waris Kesultanan Ternate dipimpin oleh Sultan Muda Mudzafar Syah, menyerahkan istana kesultanan ini kepada Pemerintah Direktorat Jenderal Kebudayaan untuk dipugar, dipelihara dan dilestarikan sesuai dengan peraturan perundang-undangan yang berlaku.
