From when I started playing D&D in 1976, it was obvious that this was a 1:1 tactical skirmish game. The original element to the game was that you played as a team (a ‘party’), against a series of bad guy teams, run by one person, the Dungeon Master or ‘DM’ (the clue is really in the name). Occasionally you ganged up on a single, more powerful, bad guy. Add to this that there was enough plot created by the DM to stitch the skirmishes together, and you could improve your figures over time. Campaigns consisted of a patron directing the party to take on a series of bad guy teams in a variety of environments. Again with enough plot to stitch it together. Back when I was six...
