Σε αυτόν τον μισό αιώνα, το Ρέθυμνο, η πόλη των Γραμμάτων, από το παλιό «παντέρμο Ρέθεμνος» μεταλλάχτηκε σε μια σύγχρονη τουριστική πόλη, που σε τίποτα δεν θυμίζει τα παλιά, «πέτρινα» χρόνια της. Η δημιουργία του Πανεπιστημίου και η αλματώδης αύξηση του τουρισμού, με την παράλληλη δημιουργία σύγχρονων τουριστικών υποδομών, έδωσαν την οικονομική ώθηση στην πόλη, που κάποιοι, λίγοι, ονειρεύονταν από παλιά.
