Είναι ένα από τα σημαντικότερα Ιερά της Αρχαιότητας, αφιερωμένο στον πατέρα των θεών Ολύμπιο Δία. Είναι ο τόπος όπου γεννήθηκαν και τελούνταν κατά την αρχαιότητα οι Ολυμπιακοί Αγώνες και έχει καθιερωθεί ως διεθνής πολιτιστικός κατεξοχήν τουριστικός προορισμός. Ο τόπος, που είναι εξαιρετικής φυσικής ομορφιάς, αποτελεί ένα από τα σύμβολα του ελληνικού πολιτισμού αλλά τα τελευταία χρόνια δεν αποτελεί το κέντρο της ελληνικής προσοχής, ενώ παραδόξως αποτελεί εδώ και δύο αιώνες το κέντρο της παγκόσμιας.
