They also pitched pro users on a new setup – forget about desktop computers. Get one of these laptops and plug everything into it with a single thunderbolt cable.   It turned out that Apple was writing checks that the 2016 laptops couldn’t cash. The laptops were thermally constrained and constantly ran hot. That was only exacerbated by running in clamshell mode. The laptops couldn’t match desktop GPU performance. Apple farmed that job out to eGPUs, but support for these devices was buggy and performance still wasn’t as good as putting a GPU into a tower PC directly. Most of these problems went away with the release of Apple Silicon laptops. ARM Macs run much cooler and throttle less than the older Intel model...
