英語とEnglishの間（はざま）英語とEnglishの間（はざま）このブログでは私のライフワークである英語研究の記録を残していきます。日本の英語教育の問題や和製英語のような英語文化について考察しつつ、冠詞や時制のような日本人にはわかりにくい英語の法則や謎にも挑戦します。 2020年6月19日金曜日「Go To Travelキャンペーン」の英語英語には文法的に間違ってはいないけれど、ふつうはそうは言わないという表現がたくさんあり、どう言えば自然な英語になるのかは理屈ではないので、覚えていくしかないと思っています。新型コロナウイルスによって落ち込んでいる観光業や飲食業の需要喚起のために「Go To Travelキャンペーン」という国の事業が発表されましたが、「Go To Travel」という表現は聞いたことがないので非常に気に掛かるところです。（ちなみに、この意味の「キャンペーン」も英語では通常promotionと言います。）「Go To Travel」の不自然さは日本語に訳したときに、「旅行に行くために行く」になるところです。travel自体に移動の意味があり、同じような意味を繰り返しているところは不自然としかいいようがありません。日本語では「旅行に行く」と確かに言いますが、それを「Go To Travel」と直訳するのはさすがに無理があるということです。「Go To Travel」の問題については、こちらを読んでいただくといいのですが、「go traveling」も文法的には正しいけれども、ふつうはそう言わないと書かれています。「go to travel」だけではぎこちないとした上で、 I went to Africa in order to travel by car from the Cape to Cairo. なら可能とも書かれています。「喜望峰からカイロまで車で旅をする（移動する）ために、私はアフリカへ行った」という意味ですが、同じ「移動する」という意味を持つgoとtravelが別々の移動行為（「アフリカへ行く」と「アフリカを縦断する」）として記述されているからでしょう。日本政府が「Go To Travel」などと大々的に宣伝すると、この言葉が頭に刷り込まれてしまい、うっかり口から出てしまい...
