‘Eiland’, by Dutch artists Stefan van Dinther and Tobias Schalken is an occasional avant-garde comics anthology filled with mesmerizing formal experiments — and a kind of visual poetry that is bemusing and ravishing in equal measure. Eiland is protean, free-minded and unbeholden to comics tradition — in fact startlingly original. Every issue has a cluster of stories that vary wildly in style and tone. It's an alternating current of chaos and confusion... or so it looks at first.
