And yet, with all of its incredible fantasies and legends, no where is the book’s ability to captivate more evident than in the author’s inspiration. Laurel’s muse is her nine-year old autistic niece, Samantha. What is most mystifying about Samantha’s autism is that she was diagnosed with the disorder in the United States after taking a family vacation in the Philippines. A harmless coincidence perhaps.
