Sebelumnya, para dokter selalu menganggap satu jenis mikroba sebagai pemicu munculnya satu jenis penyakit. Para ilmuwan juga harus membudidayakan mikroba di laboratorium. Kini mereka harus berpikir mengenai faktor yang mengubah ekosistem sehat dari keseluruhan mikroba yang hidup dalam tubuh manusia. Cara pembudidayaan di laboraturium ternyata juga tidak terlalu efektif. “Sebab, banyak mikroba yang hidup pada manusia sulit untuk dibudidayakan di laboratorium,” kata Phillip Tarr dari Washington University School of Medicine, St Louis. Dan sejauh ini hanya ada beberapa ratus spesies mikroba yang berhasil diisolasi dari tubuh manusia....
