Το σπήλαιο αποτέλεσε καταφύγιο ανθρώπων για πολλές χιλιάδες χρόνια, ενώ βεβαίως είναι πολύ πιθανό ότι υπήρξαν και διαστήματα που το εγκατέλειπαν, ανάλογα με τις καιρικές συνθήκες που επικρατούσαν, καθώς το κλίμα άλλαξε επανειλημμένως στη διάρκεια αυτών των χιλιάδων χρόνων. Το σπήλαιο χρησίμευσε επίσης στα νεότερα χρόνια ως καταφύγιο για τον ντόπιο πληθυσμό σε καιρούς πολέμου, αλλά επίσης για το σταυλισμό ζώων».
