There have been reports of unjustified police violence, arbitrary searches, prolonged and unlawful detentions, poor conditions in detention centres, and other breaches of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. At the same time, police seemed to abandon four police cars to be burned, and failed to protect Toronto’s independent shops from vandalism on the first day of the summit.
