Industria auto italiană de la finele anilor ’60 a fost un teren de luptă, unde orgoliile și rivalitățile au atins cote maxime. Un exemplu elocvent al acestei atmosfere tensionate este povestea dintre constructorul italian De Tomaso și celebrul Carroll Shelby, figură emblematică în lumea auto americană. În centrul acestei rivalități s-a aflat un simbol al răzbunării: De Tomaso Mangusta, o mașină care nu doar a vrut să concureze, ci și să „ucidă” simbolic Cobra lui Shelby. Mangusta, produsă între 1967 și 1971, avea un nume sugestiv – „mangusta” fiind animalul cunoscut pentru abilitățile sale de a ucide cobrele. Se spune că Alejandro de Tomaso a ales acest nume ca o replică la un parteneriat eșuat cu Shelby.
