April 2, 2015 — Leave a comment The Coal Seam Gas industry in Australia boomed in the early 2000’s, with 95% of Australia’s Coal Seam Gas being produced in Southeast Queensland. The Surat Basin (inland from Brisbane) produces 60% of Australia’s Coal Seam Gas, and the Bowen Basin (inland from Rockhampton) produces 35% of Australia’s Coal Seam Gas. In 2011 there were more than 4,000 Coal Seam Gas wells in Queensland. Unfortunately, landowners have been left to feel helpless, discovering that resources underground are owned by The State, as the Government exercises its right to explore and mine on what community members thought was their own private land (Fleming & Measham, 2015; Wake Up World, 2011).
