In the books, he does everything in his power to please his unloving father, to no avail. To make matters worse, Peter Jackson completely misinterprets his character in the movie adaptations. The director wanted an “external conflict” for Frodo to contrast with the “internal conflict” of the One Ring. In Jackson’s hands, Faramir devolves from one of the most noble men in the Lord of the Rings to a rash and easily corrupted copy of his brother.
