Sebelum melanjutkan kuliah ia sudah menyelesaikan hafalan Qur’an. Mursi menceritakan pengalamannya sewaktu masih di sekolah menengah pertama. “Jarak antara rumah dengan sekolah saya sekitar 4 kilometer. Biasanya saya ke sekolah menggunakan transportasi umum, namun tidak jarang saya memilih berjalan kaki supaya ongkos transportasi bisa saya tabung.” Selepas SMA, Mursi kemudian mengambil kuliah di Fakultas Teknik Universitas Kairo. Ia termasuk mahasiswa cerdas. Hal itu dibuktikan dengan kemampuannya lulus dengan predikat cum laud pada 1975.
