Desde que uno se adentra en el mundo de la tipografía y del diseño de alfabetos, siempre ha tenido como referente flotante la inscripción de la Columna Trajana (114 a.c.) como el modelo a seguir para las mayúsculas llamadas romanas , y no ha sabido muy bien por qué. Incluso un viaje a la sede original de tan mítica inscripción no ha hecho sino acrecentar las dudas. Reviso todos mis libros, desde los comunes a los raros, en los que haya referencias a los orígenes de la tipografía, la escritura e incluso del alfabeto occidental, y en todos vuelvo a encontrar esa mención continua a unos modelos que dicen son los mejores en los que se basan las letras de caja alta romanas y que «de hecho pueden considerarse como las formas básicas de la rotulación europea occidental» [Goudy, 1918] , por lo que constituyen «la referencia a seguir y el modelo de equilibrio» ...
