I followed the aide into my patient’s bedroom and was met with a scene that immediately stabbed my heart. His eyes were rolled back, fluttering erratically against the tops of his eyelids. His tongue was hanging sideways, and his exposed abdomen was flopping up and down as he desperately panted for air. His limp body listed sideways, battling, but losing against the full force of gravity. I watched my buddy suffocate, for lack of a better word. He was gone within a couple hours.
