The higher numbered books are the most rare and demand the higher prices. Ballantine’s Illustrated History of the Violent Century were the first book series I actively collected.  They were published between 1968 and 1975 and divided into seven groups, Weapons, Battle, Campaign, War Leader, Politics in Action, Human Conflict, and Full Color Special.  They are only 160 pages in length and are lavishly illustrated which makes them fast reads.  They have card covers and were designed to be produced cheaply, initial volumes retailed for only $1.00 each.  The economies in production have proven an obstacle to collecting quality examples, as they are prone to cracking along the spine...
