Ada beberapa versi mengenai kisah meninggalnya Rasulullah SAW (lihat Detik-Detik Meninggalnya Rasulullah ). Namun bukan menjadi concern dari tulisan ini mana yang lebih benar. Yang menjadi kisah yang sama-sama diakui adalah bahwasanya setelah Rasulullah SAW meninggal dunia, beberapa sahabat utama termasuk Abu Bakar r.a. dan Umar bin Khattab r.a. menghadiri pertemuan di Saqifah Bani Sa’idah (saqifah adalah semacam balai pertemuan atau balairung).
