Biaya pembangunannya diambil dari dana rampasan perang jepang dalam kata lain semua di tanggung oleh pemerintah jepang dari kontraktor dan pekerja Pada awalnya, jembatan sepanjang 1.177 meter dengan lebar 22 meter ini, dinamai jembatan bung karno. Menurut sejarawan djohan hanafiah, pemberian nama tersebut sebagai bentuk penghargaan kepada presiden ri pertama itu.
