Dalam kajian ushuluddin (pokok-pokok ajaran Islam), ilmu yang mempelajari aspek lahiriah disebut syariah atau fiqh. Sedangkan aspek ruhani disebut ilmu tasawuf atau spiritualitas Islam. Ayatullah Murtadha Muthahhari, ulama dari Iran, menyebut ilmu yang berkaitan dengan spiritualitas ini dengan istilah irfan. Menurutnya, irfan ini merupakan ilmu Islam yang membahas dimensi ruhani (batin) Islam. Isi, ajaran, dan nilai-nilai yang dibahasnya tak jauh dengan ilmu tasawuf. Hanya istilahnya yang berbeda.
