July 8th, 2024 Am I overdoing it? I thought this was a relatively modern phenomenon, but it turns out “overthink” comes from way back according to the Oxford English Dictionary, who have also declared the word “obsolete”. Back in the real world, it seems to be flourishing uncontrollably like verbal Japanese Knotweed. It’s become one of those words I feel like swatting at, like a fly on my face. I’m also wondering if the fact that I wrote “Knotweed” in a blog means that some algorithmic malevolence will crash the value of our flat (because you liked this, we like this). Best not to think about it. What about some other gerunds? The first thing I notice is that the spellchecker won’t let me make them one word – there must be a hyphen.
