Le immagini dell’Enrico V scorrevano davanti al mio sguardo bambino. Alla fine della grande battaglia di Agincourt, il manipolo di soldati al seguito del re d’Inghilterra aveva avuto la meglio sull’esercito di Francia, di gran lunga più numeroso. Dal fango riafforavano i cadaveri, e i corpi sghembi dei soldati superstiti intonavano un canto: “non nobis Domine, non nobis, sed nomini tuo da gloriam” (non a noi Signore, non a noi, ma al tuo nome dà gloria). Rimanevo stordito davanti a quel suono armonioso e cadenzato che seguiva la furia animale dello scontro. Per quale ragione, mi chiedevo, quei soldati stremati, scampati all’abisso, anziché attribuirsi il merito di quella vittoria, onoravano e lodavano il Signore?
