Ma le scie di condensa si manifestano in particolari occasioni: L’aereo deve volare ad una quota di almeno ad 8000m. La temperatura deve raggiungere almeno -40° centigradi con umidità almeno al 70%. Inoltre le condensazioni fuoriescono dai motori dei jet per pochi metri e per pochi istanti. Da qualche anno nel mondo occidentale (in Italia dal 1999 ca.) si intravedono invece scie rilasciate a quote minori, lunghe chilometri e che si mantengono per ore la loro ampiezza fino ad assumere la fisionomia di nuvole vere e proprie.
