The buildings reflect the grayscale bricks and the darkened cobble stones. But this all changes if you happen to be in Maastricht during the month of February. Walking down the streets, window displays start to catch your eye. The sweets in the candy shop window and the displays of boots in the shoe store are now accompanied by streamers and clown figurines. Carnival in Maastricht is a four day celebration at the end of February. It officially starts on a Sunday but for many people the partying starts well before, sometimes even on Wednesday or Thursday.
