According to the information supplied by Christie’s, the head was initially owned by the Swiss antiquities dealer Heidi Vollmoeller who acquired it in the 1960s. Vollmoeller held the head for roughly the next 15-20 years, until it was sold to the Merrin Gallery in New York in the 1980s (and then onto other anonymous owners). Unsurprisingly, however, I found issues with this provenance offered, and suggested that it had at least been partially fabricated and that the head was likely owned by the dealer Nicolas Koutoulakis.
