Acatistele sunt rugăciuni prin care cerem mai ales mijlocirea sfinţilor pe lângă Dumnezeu, spre a ne ajuta sau a ne izbăvi la vreme de nevoie şi de necaz. Ele nu fac parte din rânduiala celor şapte Laude şi nici din celelalte slujbe ale sărbătorilor de peste an, ci se citesc la orice vreme, în afara ceasurilor de slujbă ale Bisericii, la cererea credincioşilor şi pentru feluritele lor nevoi. Se numesc acatiste (în greceşte „aj akatistoi hymnoi”), pentru ca în timpul lor nu stăm jos în strane, ci în picioare sau în genunchi în faţa icoanei sfântului spre care ne îndreptăm rugăciunile noastre. Acatistele sunt alcătuite din mai multe cântări de laudă şi de rugăciune către Mântuitorul, Sfânta Fecioară sau alţi sfinţi. Aceste cântări poartă numele de condace şi icoase.
