Όρθωσε το σώμα του και ένιωσε πιασμένους όλους τους μύες. Βρισκόταν σε ένα μεγάλο δωμάτιο που έμοιαζε με αίθουσα αναμονής. Γύρω του πρόσεξε και άλλα παγκάκια, ήταν όμως όλα άδεια. Σε μια γωνιά της αίθουσας βρισκόταν ένα ευρύχωρο λευκό παραβάν. Στο πλάι του ένα ογκώδες γραφείο. Από πάνω του υπήρχε μια επιγραφή: «Κέντρο υποδοχής μεταναστών». Πίσω του κρεμόταν ένας μεγάλος καθρέφτης. Σηκώθηκε και κοιτάχτηκε. Είχε γένια και κοντά μαλλιά, κάτι ασυνήθιστο για αυτόν μια και πάντα φρόντιζε να ξυρίζεται. Πόσες μέρες περάσαν αναρωτήθηκε. Προσπάθησε να θυμηθεί: τρόμος, αγωνιά, κραυγές, εκρήξεις, και ένα ελικόπτερο. Έτρεχε να φτάσει στο ελικόπτερο.
