Fue inaugurado en 1998, y alberga mas de 10.000 objetos distribuidos en siete plantas, a traves de los cuales se muestra la historia de Escocia, desde sus origenes geologicos hasta nuestros dias. Tambien hay secciones dedicadas a historia natural, ciencia y culturas del mundo. El museo es muy amplio y para visitarlo en detalle pueden hacer falta varios dias. Cada dia hay visitas guiadas gratuitas en el museo que muestran una parte del mismo, con distintas tematicas.
