One of the most important is the setting where the story will take place. My first series took place in Oakland, California, a gritty city known for crime and violence. It was the perfect place for a police procedural featuring a tough, mission-focused homicide detective. It helped that I knew the city well, having worked there as a cop for twenty-five years.
