With this background, Solo first recorded with a Singaporean Malay band called “The Vigilantes” and released an EP of Chinese pops sang in Malay including “Harapan Hati Kaseh” (蔓莉). His rise to stardom happened when he adapted and recorded a Japanese song  何でもないわ  by Mari Sono (園まり) in Mandarin Chinese in 1968. This was 往日的舊夢 (Old Dreams of the Past), backed by the Chinese band, The Saints (神聖樂隊), on Eagle Record. Since then, this popular Mandarin version has been covered...
