Sebelum muncul nama Malino, dulu rakyat setempat mengenalnya deengan nama kampung ‘Lapparak’. Laparrak dalam bahasa Makassar berarti datar, yang berarti pula hanya di tempat itulah yang merupakan daerah datar di puncak Gunung Bawakaraeng. Malino dan Laparrak berada pada ketinggian antara 980-1.050 meter di atas permukaan laut.
