Ta kirjanikunimi Sjón on lühend tema eesnimest ja tähendab islandi keeles nägemust, vaadet. Sjón on kirjutanud mitmeid romaane, luulekogumikke, näidendeid, libretosid ja lasteraamatuid. Tema teoseid on tõlgitud 30 keelde. Sjón on pikalt teinud koostööd oma kaasmaalase Björkiga, nii temaga koos esinedes kui ka laulusõnu kirjutades.
