Κάποτε η συνήθεια αυτή αμφισβητήθηκε σφόδρα, όταν οι βομβαρδισμοί και οι σεισμοί γκρέμιζαν τις εκκλησίες και καταπλάκωναν στο γκρέμισμά τους τούς πιστούς. Η αφέλεια, όμως, των θρησκόληπτων δεν χάθηκε, αλλά προσέλαβε με τα χρόνια άλλες μορφές και διαστάσεις. Έτσι, υπάρχει πλήθος πιστών, ιερωμένων (μετά ή άνευ πίστεως), νεωκόρων, καντηλαναφτών και εν γένει επαγγελματιών της θρησκείας, μέχρι ακόμα και ικανός αριθμός δεξιοφρόνων επιδημιολόγων, που πιστεύουν πως ο Θεός θα τους προστατέψει από την επιδημία και διαμαρτύρονται για τα περιοριστι...
