When I read Mr. Bloom’s books I am often disconcerted and subtly annoyed by some quirk in his general attitude—something that I suspect to be hollow, inauthentic, fraudulent. And yet, despite this acquired suspicion that I have watched grow over the years, I continue to find what he says quite provocative of good questions.
