Source: Wikipedia Eleanor (1161 – 1214) was the daughter of Eleanor of Aquitaine and Henry II of England (which means she was also the sister of Richard the Lionheart and King John of England). At the age of 12, she married King Alfonso VIII of Castile, in Burgos. It seems that the dynastic reason for the marriage was to shore up the borders of Aquitaine, which bordered Castile (including the somewhat disputed territories of Gascony and Navarre – the French and Spanish Basque country in modern times).
