I got it because I wanted to understand why it’s wrong to out people as gay and why coming out in one’s own way is a beautiful act of self possession. It didn’t really deliver on this hope as its not theoretical really at all, at least how I would understand that word. It’s much more of a survey of various skirmishes in the 70s and 80s about coming out. The history and analysis of the cases is still fascinating. Basically, the book points out that many gays rightfully feel the need to protect others from being outed. Gays protect their own in this respect. However, there are exceptions.
