Posted on July 30, 2024 by arteis 2 All sailing ships are beautiful, but I’ve always thought the most interesting of all of them are those of the 17th century. Combining elegant curving lines, towering geometric sails and exquisite baroque decoration, I find them beguiling compared to later sailing ships. Being of Dutch heritage, I’m particularly interested in the Netherlands’ seagoing heritage of that time. And none more so than Abel Janszoon Tasman, the first European to sight my own country in 1642. Tasman never actually came ashore in New Zealand, due to a fatal cultural misunderstanding that led to four of his sailor...
